Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence (AI) and other forms of machine learning can leverage vast datasets to surface new insights, such as helping astronomers discover distant galaxies and scientists develop novel compounds for new medicines. However, these technologies can also produce significant harm by exploiting personal data to make automated decisions that affect people’s lives without adequate transparency, ethical considerations, or democratic oversight. Similarly, generative AI can open new avenues for free expression in art and music and make information more accessible. It could also displace working artists and other creators as well as exacerbate disinformation by automating the spread of false information. Policymakers can balance these benefits and harms by adapting existing regulations to protect the public while developing more specific rules to address the unique challenges of these technologies.
