Workforce for AI Trust Act - H.R.9215 | Legislation | United States | Jul 30, 2024 | Passed the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology | Sep 11, 2024 |
Summary
The bill proposes the establishment of academic fellowships and training to facilitate the creation of interdisciplinary teams focused on making ethical and trustworthy AI. The act would create a fellowship program for graduate and postdoctoral researchers who are committed to a career in advancing the topic of technology ethics and trustworthy AI. The program would be open to researchers in all related disciplines, including social sciences and the humanities. It would provide funding for tuition and/or stipends for the awardee, and would require the award recipient to produce research on these topics in collaboration with AI researchers at their host institution.
Additionally, this act would form AI skills-based training and workshops across STEM fields through the NSF. These workshops would require the inclusion of a range of academic perspectives on AI, including ethics, linguistics, and behavioral sciences. The NSF would also need to ensure that peer review panels for related merit rewards consist of interdisciplinary perspectives on AI, including the humanities and social sciences. These changes would be enacted via amendments to the National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Act of 2020.
