Summary

The bill is an amendment to the National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Act of 2020 that would allow for the creation of fellowships and regional centers focused on teaching AI. The act would create scholarships and fellowships for undergraduate and graduate students who are pursuing a degree related to the design, development, and implementation of AI. These awards would go directly to student tuition and/or stipend, with a priority for students who are seeking degrees focused on AI education, AI and agriculture, and advanced AI manufacturing. The NSF will also create awards to be given for AI-centered professional development (for students and faculty,) as well as offering similar fellowships for K-12 educators and people working within industry.

Additionally, this act would create a pathway for up to eight geographically diverse career and technical schools to be designated as “Community College and Area Career and Technical Education Centers of AI Excellence.” The goal of these centers would be to drive AI workforce development, scale up existing AI education programs, and create job pathways for students through partnering with potential employers and apprenticeships. Financial awards to promote the development and integration of AI into K-12 schools would also be created.
