Joy Hyvärinen

Joy Hyvärinen specializes in freedom of expression, in particular issues related to national security. From 2021-2023 she was on the board of Finnish PEN, part of the PEN International network. She was previously head of advocacy at Index on Censorship in London. Before that she led the nonprofit Foundation for International Environmental Law and Development from 2007 to 2015. She was an Associate Fellow with Chatham House (the Royal Institute of International Affairs) from 2000 to 2007. She has served on the board of the Verification Research, Training and Information Centre (Vertic).
