Hannah Lipstein

Hannah Lipstein is a researcher and program associate with Data & Society’s Climate, Technology, and Justice program. With 15 years of activist and professional experience in environmental, anti-militarism, and anti-violence movements, she is most interested in how communities can fight back against the interlocking matrices of exploitative technologies, resource extraction, growth at all costs, and the war machine. Previously, Hannah worked in intimate violence prevention and response, specializing in restorative and transformative justice, particularly within LGBTQ+ communities. Over the years, she has worked as a tall ship sailor on environmental education and research vessels; her up-close view into the maritime shipping industry sparked her fixation on the fossil fuel-powered physical infrastructures underpinning the global economy. Hannah recently completed a master’s degree in Media, Technology, and Democracy at American University’s School of Communication, where she wrote her thesis on the failure of emerging federal AI policy to address the environmental implications of AI infrastructures. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in women’s and gender studies from Wellesley College.
