David McNeill

David McNeill is a philosopher and scholar of the history of European philosophy. After a 25-year academic career, most recently as the Robert Aird Chair of Humanities at Deep Springs College, he now works as an independent writer and researcher. He is the author of An Image of the Soul in Speech: Plato and the Problem of Socrates, and his publications include articles on ethical deliberation, human autonomy, and social freedom. Since 2020 he has been working on projects in the philosophy of law and philosophy of mind. His current working paper, “A Theory of Law for the Next Founding Generation," presents a novel theory of fundamental law, grounding the legitimacy of a constitutional order in the deliberative activity of the people. He co-teaches the No We Don’t Live In A F#%*ing Simulation mini-course and writes a newsletter with the same title.
