Charley Johnson

Charley Johnson leads Data & Society’s Public Technology Leadership Collaborative (PTLC), a peer learning collective of scholars, practitioners, and government leaders working to ensure data and technology serve the public interest. He previously led the organization’s Disinformation Action Lab, which was awarded the University of Washington Center for an Informed Public’s inaugural Award for Excellence for its work on the 2020 Census. Prior to joining D&S, Johnson co-founded and led the Center for Digital Development at the US Agency for International Development. Charley is the creator of Untangled, an acclaimed newsletter and podcast about our sociotechnical world and how to change it. His first book is for anyone who wants to learn how to think about artificial intelligence and its social entanglements. Charley holds a master’s degree in public policy from the Harvard Kennedy School and a bachelor’s from the University of Washington.
